New Year Plans

I know I’m not the only one who hesitates to make any kind of big plans for this new year, considering just how ridiculously unpredictable things were in 2020. For example, I really want to go back to Steampunk Symposium in August, and I want to take a research trip to New England in the spring. But considering both of those things require air travel, I don’t know if they will happen.

There are things I have more control over, and I’m trying to concentrate on those. I know I’m going to publish two books this year, as usual. I also have several major sewing projects and changes I’m making on my patreon (yes, those go hand in hand), which I’m trying to get set up.

Perhaps the biggest thing that is still up in the air is my career. If 2020 taught me anything, it’s that I’m happiest working from home, but I need the flexibility of making my own schedule and workflow. I’ve been feeling for a while that I’m unsuited to my current position, much as I love the people I work with. So I’m trying to make 2021 the year I start working for myself. In order for that to happen, I really need to focus on increasing my book and pattern sales, my patreon membership, and creating additional revenue streams. I’ve already started–I now of editing services listed on Fiverr for a much lower price than I would normally charge.

There is one other change I’m looking to make, that perhaps you, dear reader, can help me with.

For the past several years, we have been supporting the Navajo Water Project, which brings clean drinking water to Native communities in North America. I want to continue to support them, especially now, when First Nations/ Native American communities are some of the hardest hit by Covid.

However, after rescuing our FIV+ kitty, Gwyd, this year, I would also like to do some kind of fundraiser to help FIV+ cats. I’m not sure how I want to go about this, but I would like to support either the RASKC here in Washington (that would be the shelter that found Morrigan after she got lost; they have a program specifically to help home/foster FIV+ cats).

I would also like to help Elle Maruska. Elle and I met through Twitter. They are an American living in Spain, and are running a cat rescue out of their home. Elle takes in all cats and tries to give them their best life, no matter what condition they are in or how long that life ends up being. They’ve taken in cats that require long term health care, surgery, and more. They do their best to find new homes for them, but many end up staying with them for months or years. Spain doesn’t have much in the way of animal welfare, so it’s down to civilians like Elle to take care of the strays wandering the streets of Madrid. I’d like to be able to “sponsor” or “adopt” one of her cats (pay for necessary care, etc) or support her patreon at the $10 level at minimum (Currently, that is what we are donating to NWP per month), but if nothing else I at least want to help them raise funds since caring for that many cats is expensive!

So what do you think?

  1. Happy New Year!

I hope everyone has a better 2021 than we had in 2020.

One day we will be able to travel again. in the mean time, do what you can, change what you can, enjoy life as it is.

You may be able to get to New England after vaccines have been widely available and the virus subsides. That could be 2222 or later though.

Stay safe and have a great 2021.

What about a cat rescue gofundme page?
