When it comes to big writing marathons, I am fueled by tea.
In the past year or so, however, I’ve had a lot of problems with insomnia, and that means I usually can’t drink my go-to black tea when I get home from work, and I definitely can’t drink it at 8pm, when I typically sit down at the computer to write, so I’ve had to look for less caffeinated alternatives.
Normally I’m a tea purist, but my love of Starbucks and Panera has pushed me in another direction of late.
I confess, I do love a good latte or frapachino. I like getting fancy drinks. Milkshakes, hot chocolate, smoothies–I love them all. And in the cooler weather, I love getting a chai or matcha latte.
Helpfully, Trader Joe’s makes powdered mixes for roughly the same price as a single grande drink at Starbucks. I love making their chai lattes when I’m writing, and I use the matcha at work, with just a little spoonful of sugar. They’re best when made with hot milk, but you can also use hot water and they come out just fine.
My other two favorites are peach black tea and mint tisane.
My favorite peach tea comes from a shop I don’t get to very often in Urbana (it’s actually a ginger peach) but I also quite like the Celestial Seasons peach tea.
Twinnings Pure Peppermint is also a favorite, especially when my allergies are bothering me or I don’t feel well. Unfortunately at least three of our local grocery stores appear to no longer stock it, so I’m making do with Bigelow Peppermint tea at the moment. It’s a decent substitute, especially since I don’t usually like Bigelow tea.
