10 Things You Didn’t Know About Me

I’m pretty open about myself here, but there are probably a few things you don’t know about me. If you want to know more, keep reading.

  1. I caught pneumonia when I was nine years old while swimming in a pond.
I inhaled pond water and developed bacterial pneumonia as a result. I was very sick for that entire summer, and spent most of it sleeping on the couch and watching old movies–Fantasia, the original Star Wars Trilogy, Grease, and a lot of others I can’t remember now. It kind of kicked off all of the respiratory problems I have as an adult (asthma, bronchitis, etc), as well as my geeky inclinations.
  2. I have an obsession with wheeled sports.
Cycling, skateboarding, roller blading, roller skating. I’ve tried all of them. I’m not very good at any of them, but I using to bike for 4-8 hours as day before I started working. I also have an intense interest in roller derby and professional skateboarding, though I have absolutely no interest in watching the Tour de France. Don’t ask me why.
  3. I didn’t have a lot of friends as a kid.
Juvenille Killdeer, for those unfamiliar. Apparently, the babies are able to swim, even though they aren’t water fowl. I don’t know about the adults.

I was really isolated growing up, and couldn’t see friends outside of school very often. Summers were miserable. I used to catch frogs, crickets, grasshoppers, and especially fuzzy caterpillars to be my “playmates.” I also tried to raise a (wild) baby bunny (it died 😦 ) and once caught a baby killdeer, but my parents made me put it back.

  4. I was always the quiet one in school.
In fact, I was left behind on school trips at least three times that I can count.
  5. My favorite (wild) animals are flamingos, pandas, foxes, and bats.
…But I’m afraid of birds. I’ve been attacked by pretty much every bird I’ve ever met (revenge for capturing that baby bird?), so I tend to stick with furry creatures. Usually within ten minutes of walking into someone’s house, I have their dog or cat on my lap, even if said dog or cat is known for hating everyone.
  6. I’ve traveled more outside the US than in it.
In the US, I’ve been to a few Ohio cities, Michigan, Tennessee, Washington DC, and Florida. Outside the US I’ve been to Ottawa, Montreal, Dublin, London, Bath, Edinburgh, and more Italian cities than I can name at the moment. I actually have a list of over 100 cities I want to see before I die (both in the US and around the world). If I had to pick a place to go tomorrow (and it couldn’t be someplace I’d been before) it would be San Francisco. I’ve always wanted to go there.
  7. I’m allergic to really stupid things.
Like soy, penicillin, and lavender. If it’s super common, it probably makes me sick.
  8. I knew how to read before starting kindergarten, but didn’t become a Reader until 3rd grade.
I thought books were boring until I started reading the American Girl books. Kirsten was the first character I ever saw who was as isolated and awkward as me.
  9. I’m the biggest wuss you’ll ever meet.
A lot of the books I’ve been writing lately (which have not made it to Amazon yet) could be classified under horror. For that matter, so could Evie. But I didn’t grow up watching horror. I didn’t see my first horror movie until college. I wasn’t even allowed to watch the Nightmare Before Christmas as a kid, and it wasn’t until my Freshman year of college that I watched Hocus Pocus all the way through (I kept having to stop at the point where Binx gets hit by a bus).
Now horror is one of my favorite genres, but I tend to watch it mostly on DVD. With the lights on. While someone else is home.
  10. My boring super powers are knowing when a low pressure system is coming through, and typing with wet nail polish.
My nose was broken a couple of times as a kid, so I get killer headaches every time it’s about to rain.
As for the nail polish thing, that just takes practice and determination.

  1. Yet again, I am reminded why I like reading your blog. Common threads, or nearly so, always seem to resonate. 2) I have a hatred for “ball sports” that borders on the irrational, but anything with wheels intrigues me. 3) Few friends, but I’d do pretty much anything for that precious few. 4) Quiet, reading kid in the corner, because…. 8) My parents played the most horrible prank on me by teaching me to read before I even entered Kindergarten.

When all the high school heroes we couldn’t identify with are slipping into alcoholism because of busted knees that ended their careers, some of us will continue to quietly crank out our novels, in perfect health except for our allergies. 🙂
